In honour of Engineering Week, the boys and girls of St Fergus’ National School, enjoyed a day of engineering bridges under the guidance of Julia and Cinta of Brixx Club. It was a really fun way to be introduced to the theory and science behind these magnificent structures.
We began be examining famous bridges like The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. We talked about the important jobs done by the foundations, the piles and the deck of bridges. Each part of the bridge serves a specific purpose. We investigated simple bridge structures made of paper and saw the difference that can be made to the strength of a structure by adding triangles or through adding side walls.
Finally the real fun began, as we were let lose on the piles of LEGO* around the room. Each group of pupils was invited to construct a bridge of their own. As you can see from the results about, each bridge was unique and special-just like our pupils. Well done to all!
