An exciting week was had by the students of St. Fergus’ N.S. as they held their own Presidential Election for 2018. Six pupils opted to be the candidates, each taking on the persona of one of the actual candidates running for the Áras.
Since Monday, the pupils have been learning about the role of the President and the duties that go with the Office. Teams worked on behalf of the boys and girls running for election and pretty soon posters, flyers, badges and even sweets were being passed around in an effort to secure votes.
This morning, Thursday 25th October, the six anxious candidates, delivered their final speech to a captive audience in the school Halla. Their hard work and knowledge of current political issues affecting Ireland is to be commended. Each spoke clearly and with confidence on the matters close to their hearts. They then answered questions from the teachers in a capable and candid way.
Next to the voting. Ballot papers were distributed to those pupils who had registered to vote during the week. Using the P.R. system, students numbered their preference from 1 to 6.
Counting next! As the teachers counted the votes, candidates and students looked on nervously. As those with the lowest votes became eliminated, transfers became crucial. The female vote proved vital for Joan Freeman as she jumped to second place. Though no candidate reached the quota of 42 votes, on the fourth count, Mr Seán Gallagher was deemed elected by the Presiding Officer, Ms Deirdre Dillane.
The unsuccessful candidates graciously clapped for President Elect Seán Gallagher and he addressed the crowd with a victory speech!
Living Democracy on show for the young people of Glin!
Well done to all!
