During Science Week, First and Second class spent a lot of time working on some small experiments. We mixes “chemicals” to give us a number of reactions. Our favourite experiment of all was our Lava Lamps.
We began by pouring, water, vegetable oil and food dye into an empty water bottle. Each of us chose our favourite colour for our lava lamp. The oil and the water did not mix, as the vegetable oil is more dense than the water, That is way it settles on top of the water. We then dropped in an effervescent vitamin tablet. Bubbles of air were released and they carried the coloured water up through the oil to the surface. When the air bubbles popped on the top of the oil, the coloured water sank to the bottom again. This created our lovely lava lamps.
