The Floating Egg

1st and 2nd class were very busy this science lesson trying to figure out which glass of water the egg would float in.

Materials:  We needed 4 glasses of water, salt, sugar, flour and fresh eggs.

Procedure:  We filled each glass three-quarters full with water.

We stirred a few tablespoons of salt into one glass of water, until it dissolved.

We stirred the same amount of sugar into the second glass of water.

We stirred the same amount of flour into the third glass of water and left the fourth glass of water plain.

We had to guess which glass of liquid the egg would float in.

Results:  As a class, we concluded that an egg is more dense (heavier) than plain water, so the egg sank.  Salt water, is more dense than an egg so the egg floated.

There were lots of happy helpers on hand to carry out the experiment.  Take a look!!

Moon Sand

Moon sand is silky and mouldable and takes just two ingredients to make.  It’s an amazing sensory dough!  1st and 2nd class absolutely loved making it and it kept them engrossed for well over a half an hour!

We added one cup of baby oil to 8 cups of flour.  Stirred well.  We used our hands to mix, but a spoon or whisk could also be used. Take a look at our mess-factor.
