September has been a busy month in St Fergus N.S., it’s great to hear the hum of children busy at work as you walk through the school. The resource classrooms have been a hive of activity engaging in a wide variety of work throughout the month.
A new Morning Activity Group has been set up. Each morning a group of children come and engage in various physical exercises, games, team building skills, relaxation exercises, visualisation stories etc. This allows us to manage our emotions and prepare ourselves for the day at school.
A lot of activities and games are played in the Resource Room to help us remember what we have learned in the class. Games to help us recognise words, to remember our tables and to help us understand our work better.
We also love making a mess! We did a lot of sensory play in September to help stimulate all our senses, allowing us to smell, feel, hear and see (no tasting yet!). We loved experimenting with different colours and textures and playing with our end result. So far we’ve made play dough, we coloured rice, we experimented with shaving foam and now we’re beginning to use all our senses to engage with autumn.
Our social and emotional skills are also improving day by day. With each visit we identify how we feel today and explain what makes us feel that way. It helps us deal positively with our emotions and find solutions to any problems we may be having.
We also play games that encourage speaking and listening, turn taking and help us understand the best thing to do in different situations. A popular game with some of the older children is ‘Socially Speaking’.
This is simply a brief overview of some of the activities we do in class; we’re looking forward to fun and learning over the coming months!
