Memorable Moments – Senior Infants – 2017/18

November – People Who Help US

Nurse Mary’s Visit

Méabh’s Mum is a nurse and she came to talk to us about being a nurse. She showed us how to use a stethoscope and took our blood pressure and pulse. She read the story ‘Going to the Doctor’.  Thank you Mary, we had lots of fun!  Take a look.

Post Office Visit

During the month of November we were busy bees learning all about the Post Office. We have learned about the people who work in the Post Office and we used lots of new vocabulary in the role-play centre like parcel, letter, stamp, envelope, first class, air mail, cashier, address and postman. We learned to weigh parcels and letters to ensure the correct stamp is given and we learned a new rhyme called ‘The Postman’!

In addition, we have really enjoyed reading a story about the Jolly Postman. The Jolly Postman had a busy job delivering letters to lots of our favourite story characters – Cinderella, Goldilocks, the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood.

We liked this story so much that we decided to write our own letters to Mom and Dad. Then we were lucky enough to get the chance to visit the Post Office in Glin to post the letters we carefully wrote.

We were so excited.  We held our letter in one hand and our money for the stamp in our other hand as we made our way down to the Post Office.  We had to be so careful walking down as we had to cross the street.  We asked Michelle, the post mistress behind the counter for a stamp and paid her the money. A standard stamp costs €1.  We then peeled off the stamp and put it on the top right hand corner of the envelope.

We went outside and put our letters into the letter box one by one!  The next time we saw our letters they were at home!!!

Odhran’s Dad is a postman and he was very kind to drop in and say Hello to us in Senior Infants!  We had lots of questions for Paul about his job and he even left us one of his letter sacks.

Class visit to Glin Library

Senior Infants had a most enjoyable trip to Glin library. Peg, the librarian was extremely kind in helping us locate books so that we could have a read in the library. Mrs Ambrose and Peg both read to us and we enjoyed every minute of it!  When we left the library, we were reminded of the fantastic service libraries around the country provide.

December – Christmas Antics

Elf on the Shelf

Early in December, we arrived at school to an unexpected break in.  The corridor window was open, and there were unusual footprints leading to Mrs Ambrose’s room.  We were a little nervous but excited to find out who had entered the school overnight.  With a great team effort from all in Senior Infants, we found the culprits in no time!  Santa had sent an Elf on the Shelf to keep an eye on us in the lead up to his arrival.  We felt so lucky, as not only did we get an elf, but we also got a reindeer.  Santa’s note explained that if we named them with great thought, magic would begin.  After much debate, we decided on the names Lucky and Rocky and sure enough the magic began.  We found a note telling us that a little present was hidden around the school.  We were so excited.  It was the Christmas Spraoi Annual.

Mrs Ambrose on the other hand, was not impressed!  Lucky and Rocky weren’t the tidiest and created a lot of extra work for her!  All we can say is, roll on December 2018, fingers crossed Lucky and Rocky will return.  It was a great build up to the Christmas Holidays.

Letter to Santa

Posting our letters to Santa was something we all enjoyed. We walked down to the village Post Office in Glin and we posted our letters in the special Santa Post Box.  Thanks to Trish for accompanying us down.  On the way we practised our “Safe Cross Code”, and even sang Christmas songs as we walked along!

January – Maths

Maths for fun – this enables us to learn new mathematical concepts in a fun way.  Just look at those smiles!  Happy out..

February – Food Glorious Food!

Senior Infants were exploring the theme of the Food/Restaurant during Aistear. As part of this Senior Infants had a special visit from Chef Sarah during the week. We had a wonderful day making bread, homemade vegetable soup and brownies.  It was lots of fun, but made our tummies grumble!  We all sat down for a wonderful lunch together and it a visit we won’t forget in a hurry.  Our thanks to Sarah for a most enjoyable cooking experience!

To continue our food and restaurant theme, Senior Infants headed down to Taste Restaurant in Glin where we had a chance to order our own meal and pay for it.  Chips and nuggets seemed to be the favourite followed by a mouth-watering jelly and ice-cream.  We are one lucky class.  We would like to thank Taste and all the staff members for a scrumptious meal!

Pancake Tuesday and Learning Through Play

It was a memorable day in St Fergus National School with the students of Senior Infants preparing for Pancake Tuesday. A set of ingredients and instructions were discussed and designed by the students before the work began. All of the students were invited to undertake one step in the pancake making process. Some students added the flour, eggs and milk. Others were in charge of the mixer. Each student made their very own pancake and placed their favourite topping on top. Thank you to the kind help of Sheila on the day. The students were all stuffed and very happy!

World Book Day

Every year the pupils of St Fergus celebrate World Book Day. Children come to school dressed up as their favourite character from a story. Everyone puts in a great effort!

Everyone looks forward to Assembly when we have a World Book Fashion Parade!

All pupils receive a book voucher that they can reclaim against the purchase of a book in local bookshops.
Can you work out who these Characters are?

April – The Final Stretch

Infant trip to Curragh Chase

Tommy the Art Man

Welcome back Tommy!  We all love the Summer term at school – but Tommy’s visit to St Fergus makes it that more special.  We love his magic, his stories and we create beautiful art work with his guidance.  Take a look!  Mrs Ambrose loves to display them in the classroom.

Dental Nurse Visit

We had SmileyEileey come to visit.  She talked to us about our teeth, how to clean them and discussed foods that are kind and unkind to our teeth.  We had to guess which snack/drink contained the most sugar.  We were shocked with the results.  We were delighted to have a dental nurse come for a visit and we were even happier when we received a goody bag when we were going home.  Thanks again SmileyEileey.

May Madness

Foynes Fire Service

Recently, Foynes Fire Service visited Senior Infants to talk to them about Fire Safety. They were very kind and brought their Fire Engine with them for us to look at, we even had a chance to climb aboard the engine.  We had great fun from trying on Firemen hats to examining the hoses and cutters on the Fire Engine.  They told us they can be called out at any time to help people in a fire and Tony showed us the special clothes and oxygen tank firemen and women wear so as they can have clean air to breath in when working in or around a fire. We even got to act as firemen and women holding the hose and spraying water onto the yard at school. Thank you so much to all the Firemen for taking time out to visit us, it’s a morning we will not forget!

School Tour – Dreamland

Infants to Second Class travelled to Dreamland in Limerick.  Dreamland was lots of fun and the children were very excited playing in the imaginative area. We travelled to Spain and Italy, we did our shopping, we were firefighters and we created new hair styles.  We all had great fun going down the slide – even the teachers!!

We even got to enjoy the park in the sunshine.  What a wonderful school tour.
