This week is Maths Week all over the country and in honour of the occasion today First and Second class had great fun carrying out a Maths Trail on our school grounds. Working in pairs we searched for the answers to a series of questions in the environs of St Fergus’ N.S. All of the questions were based on some area of the Maths Curriculum. They involved counting, drawing shapes, adding and comparing numbers. It was amazing to see just how many places we use Maths every day without even realising it.
The pairings worked very well together and when some were finished, they eagerly helped others to complete the task. Many of the questions involved the teachers cars and asked the children to find registration plate numbers. This was a great source of fun and amusement for the children. They loved seeing who had the oldest and who had the newest car. We dispelled the myth that you could tell the age of a car by its cleanliness!! We also learned a lot about our school building that we had not known before. For example, did you know that there are 23 windows to the front of our school building alone. On many of these windows there are as many as 12 panes of glass.
This exercise was another way of getting the children out of the classroom and using the knowledge and skills that they have acquired to further their education. The time flew by, with each child actively engaged in the learning experience. Well done to all!
