Below are some details and photos of the ‘Lemon Volcanoes’ experiment our super scientists got up to during Science Week:)
Lemon Volcanoes
What we used:
- Lemons
- Baking soda
- Washing-up liquid
- Trays
- A knife
- Food colouring
What we did:
- Miss Walsh, Miss Stack and Trish prepared the lemons by slicing the top/bottom off the lemons with a knife to make them sit flat.
- The cut lemons were placed on a tray and using a spoon we each took a turn to poke the centre of the lemon. This helped to bring out the juices.
- We added a few drops of food colouring to the centre of each of the lemons.
- Then we added some washing-up liquid to the lemon.
- Finally we added a spoonful of baking soda into the lemon. It started to fizz and our volcanoes erupted!
What we found out:
Lemon juice contains citric acid and when this mixed with the baking soda they reacted which caused the liquid to fizz and bubble. We really enjoyed watching the lemon volanoes erupt!!
