The Day The Crayons Quit
Our party piece this week was inspired by the famous children’s book “The Day the Crayons Quit”.
Poor Duncan just wants to colour. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from colouring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true colour of the sun.
What can Duncan possibly do to appease all of the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best?
As a class we carried out a short drama – each student had an important role to play in making their argument effective. By the end of the lesson Duncan had changed his colouring habits. We all learned a valuable lesson while working on this inspiring and colourful book:
We are all individuals in this giant crayon box of life. And when we celebrate these things that makes us each unique – well that’s when life becomes art.
After performing the drama we carried out a class scavenger hunt based on the book. As you can see from the pictures – it was very competitive. Well done to Breean and Cillian who answered all questions correctly – showing effective listening skills during class discussions!
